A five-minute walk takes you to the crater of the 'hell', from which steam rises magnificently upwards, allowing you to feel the pulse of the earth in a place truly overflowing with nature's energy. The striking Tsukahara Plateau and Mt. Yufudake can also be seen.
The crater was also featured in NHK's 'Bura-tamori' programme on 4 February 2017. In this programme, Emeritus Professor Yusa Yuuki of Kyoto University explains that the hot spring water that lies underneath the Garandake volcano serves as the source of all Beppu's hot springs and, indeed, the source of all hot water in Beppu.

Steamed eggs soaked in hot spring water and steamed for about 20 hours in the fumaroles of Mt. Garandake, where the Tsukahara Onsen Crater Spring is located.

Cold mineral spring water, gushing out from the mountainside of Mt. Garandake (approximately 800 meters above sea level), is available to buy at reception or by mail order.
Many people use it for atopic dermatitis, heat rash, acne, pimples, athlete's foot, burns, insect bites, itching, cuts, etc., and it boasts a high rate of repeat customers.
For first-time users, the spray type (600 yen including tax) is recommended.
